Action for Healthy Kids, a national organization partnering with more than 75 organizations, corporations and government agencies, supports schools that take action toward healthier eating and physical activity. The goal is to increase the health and academic success of every child. Part of their mission is “Every Kid Healthy” where “all 130,000+ schools in the United States will provide healthy foods, quality health and physical education, and comprehensive physical activity for all 55 million students by 2030.”
To achieve their Every Kid Healthy goal, Action for Healthy Kids provides funding opportunities, expert technical assistance and fun programs to mobilize school staff, families and communities to be champions for school environments that allow kids to sustain lifelong, healthy habits. The success of Every Kid Healthy is attributed to a model that includes the coordinated efforts of three elements:
- Schools developing effective plans to implement district wellness policies
- Health programs and practices implemented in school
- School-Family-Community partnerships to drive changes in wellness policies, systems and environments
Action for Healthy Kids consists of a national staff of nutrition, physical activity, education, social justice and communications professionals providing content-specific expertise, as well as state coordinators, who provide on-the-ground assistance to school communities in their assigned state. In Georgia, Action for Healthy Kids works in multiple counties to introduce effective, sustainable changes in healthy eating and physical activity.
“It’s amazing to see the growth in the network of schools in our state,” said Donna DeCaille, Georgia state coordinator for Action for Healthy Kids. “Over 900 schools participate in trainings, grants, webinars and/or receive our newsletters monthly. What’s nice is that I do not do this work alone. Our success in Georgia is due to the collaboration of many partners and programs such as Georgia Shape.”
Action for Healthy Kids has many new and fun opportunities planned for the upcoming year. Below are opportunities available for school communities to be a champion for Every Kid Healthy:
