For over 20 years, the OrganWise Guys, Inc., have worked with universities, foundations, public and private health organizations, nutrition experts and educators across the country to create a whole-child approach to the prevention of childhood obesity.
OrganWise Guys is based on organ characters like Hardy Heart, Sir Rebrum (the brain), Madame Muscle, Sid and Kid Kidney--The Kidney Brothers--and others who help kids understand how their organs function and how to care for them. These characters teach kids about important health issues. The OrganWise Guys bring the body to life, making nutrition and healthy-lifestyle lessons memorable. The manner in which the material is presented allows kids of all ages to understand, implement and share these concepts with their parents. Best of all, it’s fun!
With 24 years of experience, the OrganWise Guys evidence-based childhood obesity prevention curriculum provides nutrition and healthy living education for any place that a child spends time in their community: schools, head start centers, preschools, summer camps, afterschool programming, faith-based organizations, doctors’ offices, grocery stores and more.
The OrganWise Guys school curriculum is based on a four-year study, which showed statistically significant improvements in children’s weight, blood pressure and test scores Ethnically and racially diverse elementary-aged children showed the most improvement after participating in the curriculum. Similar results were found in the early care and education setting where health improvements were achieved in 2-5 year olds over one year.
In Georgia, the OrganWise Guys materials can be found in all public schools, courtesy of the Georgia Department of Education. The materials are all adapted specifically to the Georgia state education standards to ensure that student stay on task academically while also getting important nutrition lessons and physical activity opportunities in school.
“We are thrilled to continue this type of collaborative work with Georgia Shape, especially because it’s our home state,” said the President of OrganWise Guys, Inc., Michele Lombardo. “Like Georgia Shape, the OrganWise Guys are committed to improving the health status of Georgia’s future … our children! Altogether, we can help our youth establish healthy habits at a young age, which is prevention at its best.”
